As a photographer, I have invariably found myself in the role of the craftsman, with a client, their requirements, my own vision, and all elements converging upon the final product. However, in the case of the "Fisu World University Winter Games 2025", I was a guest in Turin at Nikon Italia with a single requirement: blank paper. I concede that for the first few days, this proved somewhat misleading, as the conceptual space was as wide as it was dispersive. However, through the initial chaos, I managed to discern a methodical approach and find my order. I elected to direct my attention towards a study of movement, employing a reduction of athletes to graphic elements reminiscent of Vasily Kandinsky's 'Point and Line to Plane' series, seeking a harmony akin to Piet Mondrian, while maintaining the monochrome and the harmonious forms characteristic of Herb Ritts' L.A. style.
The artistic discipline of ice skating offers a prime example of this aesthetic, showcasing a harmonious blend of simplicity, fluidity, and velocity in manoeuvres. This artistic pursuit gives rise to a visual symphony, characterised by a dynamic interplay of light and shadow, where successive, broad strokes give way to intricate, tonal nuances.
